As a member of Samsung’s Memory Solutions Lab (MSL), you will be part of an Advanced Research and Development team developing the next generation of enterprise memory and storage technologies. The team innovates, solves key technical problems in areas and products related to Samsung’s NAND flash, DRAM and other memory technologies, and tackles a variety of challenging issues in data center, server, and software infrastructure.

The Sr. Storage Research - SSD Design engineer should have an expertise in SSD internal design and architecture, NAND flash and other NVRAM technologies and knowledge about file systems/storage systems specifically designed for such SSDs. He or she will join a team of experts in researching and developing innovative solutions that utilize existing and emerging technologies to add substantial value to Samsung. The team covers a broad spectrum of topics and is building an ecosystem surrounding SSDs, NVRAM and computational storage. You will be working with the-state-of-art technologies in the context of vertical integration and optimization across H/W and S/W.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• The major role of this position is to conduct key research and development activities for new SSD technologies.
• The engineer is required to analyze the capabilities and performance of SSD and storage system in such context, identify issues, and propose and prototype new solutions across hardware and software.
• Create key IPs, implement prototypes, write or publish papers, and do standardization.
• Work with other hardware/software architects to design and engineer SSD feature prototypes, and contribute to feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with universities and international teams.

REQUIRED SKILLS

• PhD or MS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with 5+ years of industry experience. (More experienced candidates will also be considered at relevant levels.)
• Deep knowledge and expertise in SSD internal design and architecture.
• Hands-on experience and skill in SSD firmware development and enhancement, with exposure to most of the SSD internal layers including the FTL in a real NAND flash SSD.
• Must be highly motivated with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Knowledge of computer architecture.
• Good understanding of operating systems and/or storage systems and/or distributed system fundamentals.
• Good analytical abilities and problem solving skills.
• Good knowledge of other NVRAM technologies and persistent memory technologies.
• Prior experience in designing and developing features to improve the performance of SSDs and/or other file/storage systems.
• Prior experience in profiling and bottleneck analysis.
