Logic Pathfinding Group Software Engineer Intern

Summer 2021 internship applications are open September 2020.  Samsung Semiconductor summer internships start in May/June 2021.

Join us for a unique 12-14 week paid internship that offers personal and professional development. You’ll work with the teams that create new computing system architectures needed to support emerging machine learning applications, internet of things (IoT) and edge computing that benefit millions of users.  This program will give you the opportunity work on complex solutions to that address some of the world’s most complex technological challenges.


Based in San Jose, California, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. (SSI) is a multi-billion dollar subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, Ltd. and a world leader in Memory, System LSI and LCD technologies.  We provide the widest range of memory, logic, storage devices, LED components and LCD/OLED panels to enhance the user experience in home entertainment, mobile devices, lighting and computing. SSI has advanced R&D labs focused on product design and research in memory, displays, logic, image sensors, and mobile technologies. 

The Logic Pathfinding Group in Device Lab at SSI focuses on the research and development of innovative Logic technology modules and integration approaches, as part of Samsung Semiconductor R&D effort to develop leadership Silicon process technology.  This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a talented and hard-working PhD student to get involved in designing, evaluating, and improving implementation of future logic technology with a growing team.  Publications and/or patents are expected as outputs of an internship.

The convergence of emerging device architectures (Si CMOS and beyond CMOS), new memories (volatile or non-volatile) require careful assessment to understand process and system dependencies, and to determine optimal combinations that will enable performance improvement required by the growing AI and ML applications.  We are looking for candidates who can help assess impact of the structures, architectures, materials of transistor devices and interconnects, including emerging disruptive technologies.  Exploration areas include transistors, interconnects, embedded memories, new process, materials, and integration schemes, as well as design / technology co-optimization (DTCO).  Familiarity with 3D integration is a plus.


  • Explore and develop metrics (Power, Performance, Area) at different length-scales: logic cells, RO circuits, logic blocks
  • Evaluate state-of-the-art logic and interconnect integration schemes and analyze the impact on PPA
  • Help develop and test in-house modeling capabilities for PPA
  • Identify requirements for 3D integration to improve PPA for a given block design


  • Experience in using EDA tools for performance modeling
  • Experience in using EDA tools for Place and Route and timing analysis
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Publications in relevant top venues
  • PhD students in Electrical Engineering, or relevant fields


  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art process technology and integration flows
  • Familiarity with 3D integration schemes and 3D circuit partitioning schemes
