Enterprise SSD System Engineer Intern

Summer 2021 internship applications are open September 2020.  Samsung Semiconductor summer internships start in May/June 2021.

This program will give you the opportunity work on complex solutions to that address some of the world’s most complex technological challenges.


Based in San Jose, California, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. (SSI) is a multi-billion dollar subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, Ltd. and a world leader in Memory, System LSI and LCD technologies.  We provide the widest range of memory, logic, storage devices, LED components and LCD/OLED panels to enhance the user experience in home entertainment, mobile devices, lighting and computing. SSI has advanced R&D labs focused on product design and research in memory, displays, logic, image sensors, and mobile technologies. 

We are currently looking for exceptional System Engineering talent to join our Enterprise SSD team in San Jose, CA for the summer of 2020. Our team consists of experts in cutting edge enterprise and cloud storage systems that enable modern data centers. We use our expertise to successfully deploy our class leading Enterprise SSD in these systems. We work directly with customers to provide an excellent customer experience by assisting and managing the highest quality expectations. We research customer product portfolios and understand use case and access patterns as they apply to SSDs in these systems. We experiment, debug and root cause highly complex failures or performance issues that can occur anywhere in the storage hierarchy. We design, plan and manage execution of SAS and NVMe SSD qualification on customer systems that include enterprise servers and enterprise storage systems including Hyper-converged, SAN, NAS, Unified and Scale out systems.


  • Triage and root cause system, driver and device interoperability issues
  • Support customer qualification of SSD products on OEM Storage Racks and Servers.
  • Learn operation of cutting-edge SSD, system-level operation and test tool suites
  • Analyze NVMe or SAS protocol & debug utilities
  • Script test cases and analysis of performance and test data
  • Gain expertise with SSD test automation environment
  • Work with technical lead to present reports to group detailing project work

REQUIRED SKILLS  (Education Certificates, Licenses, Travel)

  • Pursuing a BS or MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Comfortable in lab environment & interacting with teams and customers; good communication skills
  • A fast learner with ability to prioritize and execute on multiple tasks.
  • Computer architecture and Linux Kernel development knowledge including device drivers
  • Scripting experience in one of Python/Perl/JavaScript is desirable



  • Knowledge of storage systems and familiarity with flash devices is desirable
  • Knowledge or Experience with one or more of the following storage related technologies: NAND Flash/FTL, Fiber Channel, NVM Express (NVMe), SAS, SATA, SCSI, SSD, PCI Express (PCIe), eMMC or UFS is desirable
